Immunity
for aspiring monarchs and popes...
The USA’s highest court has just done a good deed. Giving Donald Trump legal immunity for ‘official’ acts may make it more likely that compulsive delinquents will refuse to leave office in future. But it also makes it less likely that they will seek to remain in office, or to regain it, simply to protect themselves from prosecution for crimes already committed.
Imagine if Trump were granted immunity for official as well as unofficial acts. Would he still be running again for office?
Imagine if immunity were extended to the families of politicians. Would Joe Biden be doing the same if his son’s fate didn’t depend on it?
Would Netanyahu be rebuffing all proposals to end his war? Zelenskyy? The list goes on...
